(The New Nation)Commerce Minister M Abdul Jalil on Thursday asserted that his government would certainly change and amend the rules and acts if those were identified as obstacles to the country's trade and investment.


"The government would take necessary steps to implement the proposals and recommendations of various chambers and associations for changing or amending the laws and acts relating to trade and commerce," he said while speaking as the chief guest at a seminar on "Company Act, 1994 and Trade Organisation Rules 1994" at the Board-Room of the Bangladesh Chamber of Industries (BCI), Dilkusha in the city.


The Commerce Minister said Bangladesh has now turned into an attractive destination to foreign investors owing to a package of incentives announced by the Government.


The seminar was also addressed by BCI President Khondker Mosharraf Hossain and Vice-President AK Azad while Registrar of the Joint Stock Companies and Farms Harun-ur-Rashid and Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce Firoze Kibria presented the keynote papers titled "Company Act, 1994" and "Trade Organisation Rules, 1994" respectively.


Former Registrar of the Joint Stock Companies and Farms Mohammad Ali took part in the discussion on the keynote paper as the designated discussant.


The concluding address was delivered by BCI Director Md Abdul Tahid Mazumder.


Among others, Former BCI President Sharif M Afzal Hossain, BCI Directors Dr Md Jahangir Alam, Alhaj Jamaluddin Ahmed, Md Shamsur Rahman, Enayet Ullah Siddiqui, Shamim Ahmed, Alhaj Md Abdul Kader Shukkur, Obaidur Rahman, Golam Dastagir Gazi, Liaqat Ali Bhuiyan Milon, Alhaj Abdur Rashid, Member Zakir Hossain and BCI Secretary-General Dabir Uddin Ahmed.


BCI President Khondker Mosharraf Hossain said the existing laws of the country were formulated during the British rule which are not suitable at present. In the context of reality, the Government, apart from other rules, is now trying to make the Company Act, Labour Laws, Factory Act, Trade Organisation Rules etc up-to-date removing all the obstacles for smooth running of trade and business, he said.
